Derived from the milk thistle plant, many romantic traditional stories surround the myth of its origin from a drop of the Virgin Mary’s milk falling onto its leaves. Milk thistle seed extract contains a high amount of an active ingredient collectively called silymarin. Silymarin is well-known for its antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Throughout history, it has even been used to treat liver and gallbladder disorders, enhance breast milk production, prevent and treat cancer and even provide protection for the liver against snake bites, alcohol, and other environmental poisons. Now, it is commonly used as a complementary therapy for individuals with liver damage due to alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and even liver cancer due to its liver-protective properties. Besides that, milk thistle seed extract may even prevent age-related decline in brain function. Additionally, milk thistle seed extract may even be able to protect your bones by stimulating bone mineralisation and reducing bone loss. Due to its anti-inflammatory effect, it may even be able to help reduce acne, control blood sugar levels in diabetic patients and decrease the risk of developing diabetic complications such as kidney disease. Do note that as most of the evidence comes from animal studies, more evidence is still required to explore whether the same effects occur in humans.
